West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade
The West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade is a 20,000-square metre public open space situated at the southern tip of West Kowloon. Its 400-metre harbour-front walk, the longest in Hong Kong, is a great place for families to gather. The timber walkway and nearby lawns provide an excellent vantage point to take in the spectacular scenery of Victoria Harbour.
The one-kilometre-long Dragon of Lanterns built along the promenade is a waterfront cultural landmark. The artwork was created jointly by the Government and the people of Hong Kong. The Dragon of Lanterns consists of 70 four-metre-high triangular lighting towers (lanterns). Over 60 local artists have offered their talents to paint or do calligraphy on the lanterns. The artwork, together with the music generated by the wind chimes hung at the top, make the Dragon of Lanterns a unique visual and audio experience for visitors. Also, visitors can sign the hundreds of handprints on the timber boardwalk to symbolise the participation of the public in the beautification of the harbour-front.
Adopting an environmentally friendly design, West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade is a refreshing public space created in the most cost-effective and sustainable way: renovated old containers to house toilets and a management office; abandoned seating benches have been fixed and recycled; the boardwalk has been paved with low-cost, unfinished timber boards; and demolition debris has been recycled for use as concrete.
